5 Essential tips for looking after your caravan during the cold months

For many campers, winter is a time for pause and planning. While we wait for the days to get longer and for the Cambrils sun to warm up again, our caravan or motorhome sometimes stays resting.

However, cold and inactivity can take their toll if we don't take the right precautions. At Camping La Llosa, we want everything to be impeccable when you decide to hitch up again and visit us. That’s why we’ve prepared this expert guide to protecting your "home on wheels" during the winter.

1. The silent enemy: Control humidity

Humidity is the main challenge in coastal areas or cold climates. To avoid mold and bad odors:

  • Ventilation: If you can visit your caravan periodically, open the windows for a few minutes to refresh the air.

  • Dehumidifiers: Place anti-humidity containers (silica gel or similar) in the lounge and bathroom. They are inexpensive and very effective at absorbing excess moisture.

  • Textiles: If you won't be using the caravan for weeks, try to remove cushions, sheets, or curtains, or pull them away from the walls so air can circulate behind them.

2. Water system:

Beware of frost! Although the Costa Daurada enjoys a mild climate, temperatures can drop at night.

  • Drain the tanks: Make sure to completely empty both the fresh and waste water tanks.

  • Open taps: An expert trick is to leave the taps in the open position (with the pump disconnected) to prevent residual water pressure from damaging the pipes if it freezes.

3. Tyres and mechanics

A caravan stationary for a long time can suffer from flat spots on the tyres.

  • Pressure: Inflate the tyres to the maximum pressure recommended by the manufacturer.

  • Movement: If possible, move the caravan a few inches every month so the weight doesn't always rest on the same spot.

  • Protection: Cover the wheels with protective covers to prevent the rubber from cracking due to cold or winter sun exposure.

4. Insulation and exterior cleaning

Before letting it "sleep," give it a good exterior wash to remove any resin or salt residue that could corrode the bodywork.

  • Check seals: Inspect the rubber seals on doors and windows. Applying a bit of silicone spray will help keep them elastic and prevent them from sticking.

  • Skylights: Ensure they are properly closed but that the permanent ventilation grilles are not blocked.

5. Safety and electricity

If the caravan is going to be disconnected, it’s best to remove the battery and store it in a dry, temperate place, or use a battery isolator switch. It’s also advisable to check that all locks are lubricated with graphite.
